PERSONAL STATEMENT
I have been an academic librarian for over 25 years, eighteen of those years in music libraries. In 2017 I became the head librarian at the University of Toronto Music Library, the largest music research collection in Canada. I have been member of IAML since 2007, and my first IAML congress was Dublin 2011. I was president of the Canadian branch when we hosted the 2012 IAML congress in Montreal. I have since attended five additional IAML congresses (Leipzig (2018), Krakow (2019), Cambridge (2023), Stellenbosch (2024), Salzburg (2025). I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as a Vice President on the IAML Board for the past three years. I coordinate the work of the Development, Advocacy, Membership, and Outreach Committees and present their work to the General Assembly each year. In Stellenbosch we presented a membership discount for students, and in Salzburg we presented a membership discount by country GDP. In the coming year, the Development Committee will introduce “planned giving” and the Outreach Committee will launch a fundraising campaign in honour of IAML’s 75th anniversary.
One of the president’s initiatives is sustainability and climate action. This is one of my passions and I have been part of grassroots efforts in my library system to advance this work. In 2027 Canada will host the IAML congress at my institution in Toronto and we are working with our campus Sustainability Office to reach the highest level of sustainability certification for the event.
Throughout my career I have had a strong commitment to professional service.
It would be my privilege to serve IAML on the Board for another 3 years.
Dr Wilhelm Delport
University of Cape Town, South Africa

CURRICULUM VITAE
Since earning my PhD in 2020, I have held a research position at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, focusing on the institution’s special music collections. My research on accessibility, feminism, post-colonialism and marginalisation in music libraries has been presented at every IAML Congress since 2018 and published in Fontes Artis Musicae.
I was a recipient of the ‘Cohen’ Awards in 2022 and served on the Stellenbosch Organising Committee in 2024. I am currently a member of the Fontes Publisher Committee, the Cohen Awards Committee, and the Outreach Committee, where we have implemented various initiatives to expand IAML’s global reach.
My commitment to elevating marginalised voices is further evident in my role as Editor-in-Chief of the internationally recognised Journal of the Musical Arts in Africa, where I have led projects to strengthen and deepen scholarship across the African continent.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am grateful for the nomination to serve on the IAML Board, where I aim to bring a distinctive perspective grounded in my research and African context. Since attending my first Congress in 2018, I have been one of only a handful of representatives from the Global South, highlighting the opportunity – and responsibility – we share to develop IAML into a truly international association. With most membership and leadership historically concentrated in North America and Europe, it is crucial that we engage colleagues from underrepresented regions – not only to offer support, but also to learn from their unique experiences. The 2024 Stellenbosch Congress stands as a prominent example of such engagement.
Serving on the IAML Board would allow me to further promote the diversity and inclusivity emphasised in my research and to amplify marginalised voices, thereby ensuring IAML reflects the richness of music collections on a global scale. This applies both in theory, as discussed in my recent Fontes article on ‘guiding RISM’, and in practice, as demonstrated through our Outreach Committee initiatives, such as tiered membership based on national economic levels. I have also compiled a database of 500 African institutions with music collections to support activities of the Membership Committee.
I am committed to continuing these efforts to broaden IAML’s reach in underrepresented regions such as Africa and South America in an official capacity, promoting a genuinely international presence – across cultures and continents.
