Second international congress of music libraries held with the International Musicological Society (IMS) – Provisional commission elected to draft a constitution and guidelines for a permanent international association: Valentin Denis, chairman, Vladimir Fédorov, secretary – Working group to establish the Répertoire international des Sources Musicales (Friedrich Blume, Vladimir Fédorov, Hans Halm, Sven Lunn, Wolfgang Schmieder and Fausto Torrefranca).

Leipzig, Germany, 22-27 July 2018: Congress – New Commissions or changes: Anders Cato appointed Secretary General, replacing Pia Shekhter who had served in the role for 8 years; Richard Ranft appointed IAML Webmaster; Michelle Hahn appointed Assistant Web Editor; JeongYoun Chang appointed chair of the Membership Committee (replacing Jane Gottlieb, who remains as a committee member); Jon Bagüés replaced by Barbara Dobbs Mackenzie as chair of the Outreach Committee after many years of service; Blanka Ellederová (Prague) appointed chair of the Public Libraries Section; Ad Hoc Committee on IAML Archives established – Membership (2017): 1553 members in 49 countries – Publications: From 2019, the electronic version of Fontes Artis Musicae will be the default for individual members; the Vladimir Fédorov Award for the best article published in Fontes in 2016 was given to Sandra Tuppen, Stephen Rose, and Loukia Drosopoulou; the François Lesure Award for the best review published in Fontes in 2016 was given to Terry Dean; the Vladimir Fédorov Award for the best article published in Fontes in 2017 was given to Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl; the François Lesure Award for the best review published in Fontes in 2017 was given to Hayley Fenn – ‘R‘ Projects: RILM is preparing for the addition of the Index to Printed Music, which came under RILM’s ownership on 1 July 2018; RIdIM elected Professor Heinz Stefan Herzka as an Honorary Member of Association RIdIM and also welcomed the Australian National RIdIM Centre as a new national committee; processing the first instalment of RIPM Jazz Periodicals completed, with the collaboration of the Institute of Jazz Studies of Rutgers University, and it is planned for release the Fall of 2018; Balázs Mikusi was co-opted Board member of RISM until the elections in 2019. As a result, a position on the RISM Commission mixte became vacant and the Board replaced Balázs with Jane Gottlieb – Other matters: IAML reached tax exempt status in 2018; two changes to the Constitution and six changes to the Rules of Procedures were approved; the International Music Forum of Six Societies (ICTM; SEM; IMS; IAML; IASPM; ATMC) took place in Beijing at the Central Conservatory of Music, 11-14 July 2018; the President represented IAML at the official launch of the European Agenda for Music (IAML is listed among the organisations supporting this document); Jürgen Diet, Past-President of IAML Germany, was elected as a member of the Präsidium of the German Music Council (Deutscher Musikrat); Massimo Gentili-Tedeschi visited Yerevan to continue outreach support for music libraries in Armenia; the Advocacy Committee approved Pia Shekhter’s proposal to encourage UNESCO to establish an International Day of Music Libraries and Archives; the International ISMN Agency celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary this year. Since the beginning, Hartmut Walravens has been its director, and now the chairman. After so many years, both he and his co-chairman, Joachim Jaenecke, want to step back from their positions; the winner of the very first Liesbeth Hoedemaeker-Cohen Fund for the IAML Congress Travel Award was Katherine J. Penner from Canada; the passing of two members was sadly noted, Patrick Mills (1939-2017 and Wolfgang Rehm (1929-2017).

Kraków, Poland, 14-19 July 2019: Congress – New Commissions or changes: Jim Cassaro appointed Chair of Development Committee; Aris Bazmadelis appointed Chair, Project Group on RISM Series C; IAML updates its Rules of Procedure in Kraków – Membership (2018): 1526 members in 49 countries – Publications: Production and distribution of paper copies of Fontes artis musicae affected by COVID pandemic; the Vladimir Fédorov Award the for best article published in Fontes in 2019 was a tie between Anita Breckbill and Hannah Jo Smith, and Nancy November and Phillippa McKeown-Green; the François Lesure Award for the best review published in Fontes in 2019 was given to Eivind Buene – ‘R’ Projects: RIdIM 19th international conference held in Hobart, Tasmania; RILM launches RILM Music Encyclopedias on its platform Egret; introduces new cataloguing headwords reflecting the broadening of musicology, including “activism and advocacy”, “environment”, “psychoacoustics”, “social work”, and “video game music”; Index to Printed Music (IPM) project launched in an improved version; RILM collaborates with the Smithsonian Institution’s “Year of Music 2019”; RIPM launches RIPM Jazz Periodicals project, a partnership with the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University; 500 journals now cumulatively accessible, with 409 available in full text; online version of the originally print only Gravures musicales dans L’Illustration, 1843-1899 made available via the RIPM website; RISM Project Group on RISM Series C (Directory of Music Research Institutions) created; many RISM national working groups updating and revising older records; RISM manuscript database now contains a total of ca 1.2 million records; number of links to digital objects now stands at 54,372; RISM conference held 9-11 May 2019 in Mainz –Other matters: IAML website now archived as part of the Library of Congress Web Archive; IAML applies to UNESCO to initiate an International Day of Music Libraries and Archives; Anna Bilotta (Italy) and Catherine Henderson (Canada) awarded the Liesbeth Hoedemaeker-Cohen & H. Balázs Mikusi takes over as the new director from September 2020 – Other matters: no General Assembly held during 2020 since this is a Virtual Meeting, not a full congress; IAML issues a survey on the “Impact of COVID-19 on music provision in libraries, archives and music documentation centres”, coordinated by Anna Pensaert ; Misti Shaw (Indiana University Library) presents during the Virtual Meeting on “Music libraries in music teaching institutions: impact of COVID-19”, and a session on “The impact of COVID-19 on music libraries internationally” is moderated by Jane Gottlieb; Forum of National Representatives is busy with preparations for IAML’s 70th anniversary in 2021, with Pia Shekhter giving a presentation on the topic; Joseph Hafner presents at the Virtual Meeting on “Online archives of IAML”, providing guidelines to Branches for best practice; IAML Online Workshop on “Notated music in an online environment” held in December 2020.

Prague, Czech Republic, 24-29 July 2022: Congress – New Commissions or changes: Kimmy Szeto becomes Treasurer, 2022-2026, succeeding Thomas Kalk; IAML e-Archivist post abolished; Online Events Committee officially established (first chair is Maria Teresa Delgado Sanchez); Cataloguing and Metadata Section establishes Project Group “Annotated Exemplars of Music Cataloguing with RDA/LRM in UNIMARC” and Study Group “Linked Data Hub for Music Vocabularies”, with Maria Aslanidi appointed Chair of the former, and Christopher Holden the Chair of the latter; lona Heinonen elected Vice Chair of Public Libraries Section; Christopher Holden and Maria Aslanidi elected Chair and Vice-Chair of Cataloguing and Metadata Section; IAML’S RISM Series C Project Group disbanded (in existence from 2019-2022) – Membership (2021): 1429 members in 48 countries – Publications: The Vladimir Fédorov Award for the best article published in Fontes in 2022 given to Jonathan Frank; the François Lesure Award for the best review published in Fontes in 2022 given to Nigel Simeone – ‘R’ Projects: RIdIM 2022 international conference held at the National Musical Museum in Prague; death of long-time RIdIM Council member Dorothea Baumann (1946-2022) noted; Tina Frühauf begins work as Director of RILM from August 2022, succeeding Barbara Mackenzie, who has retired from RILM after a 30-year tenure; RILM announces acquisition of the Dizionario enciclopedico universale della musica e dei musicisti (DEUMM), edited by Alberto Basso and published by UTET between 1983 and 2005. It is RILM’s second major music dictionary acquisition following the digital Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart in late 2016; RILM finds a new (fourth) sponsor, the International Association for the Study of Popular Music [IASPM], which joins IAML, ICTM and the IMS as the project’s sponsors; on 6 and 7 December 2021, musicologists and ethnomusicologists gathered at the Palazzetto Bru Zane in Venice for a conference in honor of the founder of RIPM, H. Robert Cohen, honorary member of IAML and the International Musicological Society. During the conference he was presented with a Festschrift, Musical History as Seen through Contemporary Eyes: Essays in Honor of H. Robert Cohen, ed. Benjamin Knysak and Zdravko Blažeković (Vienna: Hollitzer, 2021). The Festschrift includes many contributions by IAML members; in Fall 2022 RIPM establishes a collaboration with colleagues in Sicily to better represent Sicilian musical history and culture in the RIPM collections; Rupert Ridgewell appointed to the RISM Commission Mixte, succeeding Richard Chesser. RISM celebrates the 70th year since its foundation in 1952 by holding a conference in Mainz on “Musical sources: past and future” in October 2022 – Other matters: IAML branches in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Switzerland and the United States celebrate their 70th anniversaries; Maria Calderisi awarded Honorary Membership of IAML; IAML 70th anniversary exhibit displayed at Prague Congress; first “IAML Members meet the Board” meeting held online in October 2022; IAML Australia changes its structure, and continues as the IAML Australia Network; following the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the IAML Board moves from two meetings per year to four (two of them online); Lizzy Buckle (UK), Wilhelm Delport (South Africa) and Julia Pestke (German) awarded the Liesbeth Hoedemaeker-Cohen & H. Cambridge, UK, 30 July-4 August 2023: Congress – New Commissions or changes: IAML Board elections took place, with the new Board comprising Pia Shekhter (President), Rupert Ridgewell (President Elect), Jürgen Diet, Stefan Engl, Janneka Guise, Anna Pensaert (Vice-Presidents), Kimmy Szeto (Treasurer), and Anders Cato (Secretary General, reappointed for a further two-year term); Board Subcommittee set up to discuss investment of IAML Funds; Houman Behzadi appointed Chair of Advocacy Committee, succeeding Anna Pensaert; JeongYoun Chang and Katie Lai appointed Co-Chairs of Membership Committee; Jaska Järvilehto appointed Chair of Archives and Music Documentation Centres Section, succeeding Joseph Hafner; IAML Rules of Procedure updated – Membership (2022) 1423 members in 49 countries – Publications: the Vladimir Fédorov Award for the best article published in Fontes in 2023 given to Armin Brinzing; the François Lesure Award for the best review published in Fontes in 2023 given to Peter Asimov – ‘R’ Projects: RIdIM annual conference (its 22nd) held in Seoul, Korea; RILM publishes the third edition of its Manual of Style as an e-book in March 2023; RIPM’s Index of jazz periodicals developing strongly; RISM database hits a new benchmark of 1.5 million source records, freely searchable through both the traditional RISM catalogue and the new RISM Online interface – Other matters: Danish IAML Branch (DMBF, Dansk Musikbiblioteksforening) abolished.
